Ben Ross & Jeff Plotner

Founders, Brackish Bowties • Charleston, SC

It's a particular man that puts a lot of thought into his groomsmen gifts, and for Ben Ross a beer stein or cufflinks weren't going to cut it. Out of necessity comes invention.

To reflect the natural beauty of the South, but elevate it with impeccable intricacy, Ben handcrafted a set of turkey feather bow ties for the men in his wedding party in 2007. That gesture begot a wave of admiration and inspiration that became Brackish only a few years later.

Today Ben and one of those groomsmen, Jeff Plotner, have an operation that honors artisan techniques, distinctive style and the spirit of the South--making their creations available to others who won't settle for ordinary accessories. Brackish is redefining tradition while crafting memorable yet personal pieces for the modern man's closet. In their Charleston production facility, they have fine tuned their process and expanded designs in order to make a lasting impact on the wardrobes of many with one-of-a-kind works of art.

Every tie is handcrafted locally in South Carolina by a team of 50 artisans and production assistants. Because every single feather is hand selected, no two Brackish bow ties are exactly alike as every piece is a sustainable work of art. Brackish has put painstaking effort into their products and prides themselves on genuine, intricate detail not found in mass production.

Bob Foley

Founder, Robert Foley Vineyards • Angwin, California

Robert (Bob) Foley began his wine making career in the Napa Valley in 1977, working at a number of highly regarded wineries including the famous Pride Mountain Vineyards, where he spent 15 years as founding winemaker. During this period he also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines. He now focuses on Robert Foley Vineyards and Switchback Ridge wines, but also creates some of the offerings from Engel Family and Padis Vineyards in the Napa Valley.

In 1998 Robert Foley Vineyards bottled its flagship Claret (a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend), and has since expanded and diversified its production to offer more of the big reds Bob is famous for – Petite Sirah, Merlot, Charbono, the limited-release Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, a Carneros Pinot Noir, a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and The Griffin (a blend of the best in the red cellar). Always seeking to create new, fun, and interesting wines, Bob has also bottled three of his favorites: a Rhone-style White Wine, a Syrah that we call Kelly's Cuvée, and a Port-style Touriga Nacional.

Bob’s reputation for producing very expressive wines that finish gracefully continues to develop at his winery facility on Napa County’s Howell Mountain, where more than 1,500 barrels are housed in an extensive cave system (completed in 2008) for the production of Robert Foley wines. Robert Foley Vineyards has a staff of four who work tirelessly at handcrafting our wines (Bob), running the office (Kelly and Shannon), and the tasting room (Truett).

When Bob's not making exceptional wine, he spends time with his wife and business manager Kelly Kehoe, and his children, and granddaughters. You can also find Bob jammin' with The Robert Foley Band when he's not in the cellar or SCUBA diving.

Huntsman •

Tony Gammell was most recently huntsman at the Keswick Hunt (VA) for seventeen seasons. Despite his Irish roots and his early experience hunting the Traditionally-Bred English foxhounds at the County Limerick (IR), Gammell built a superb pack of American hounds at Keswick which he adored. He successfully adopted a concept of zero-tolerance—no deer, no coyote—and was successful with that program. Tony looks forward to the challenge of steadying his new pack from a variety of riot in that wooded South Carolina country that crawls with every manner of critter from armadillos to possums. If he did it at Keswick with coyotes, he can surely do it at Lowcountry with armadillos!

Adam Hein is the co-owner of “On The Fly Outfitters” located in Brunswick, Georgia which offers unique Falconry Excursions and Saltwater Fly Fishing Charters to the Golden Isles. He holds Federal and State Licenses that allow him to practice the ancient sport of Falconry.

For Adam having a passion for the outdoors and adopting a natural history lifestyle is the product of many unique and wonderful early childhood experiences. Gaining an understanding of falconry came organically through countless trips afield as a small boy assisting his father while working the dogs, falcons and hawks in pursuit of quarry.

Starting in 2011, Adam was instrumental in assisting with the upstart of abatement services and falconry hunts for Sea Island provided by Layman & Hein, LLC – a wildlife consulting service founded by his father and a renowned west coast falconer and naturalist, Steve Layman. His knowledge and skills shined while offering Falconer’s Retreat where guests of the Cloister’s Broadfield Plantation gained the unique opportunity to witness falconry first-hand. John Hollified

Founder, Hollifield Bamboo Fly Rods • Sapphire, North Carolina

John Hollifield’s southern sporting roots run deep. He was raised in Western North Carolina on property owned by his ancestors for six generations. He lives in Sapphire, NC- a mecca for wild mountain trout, tumbling waterfalls and wildlife.

John was introduced to the pleasures of the outdoors at an early age by his father. Together, they spent many days in streams and afield with fly rod and shotgun pursuing trout and game.

John has always loved crafting and using his own gear, something he thinks began when he tied his first fly around the age of eight.  He vividly remembers catching a trout on that fly, and this ignited within him a passion – some may call it an affliction – for which he’s pleased to admit, he has yet to find a cure!  He began making fly rods in 1980, and since 2011, when he made his first bamboo fly rod, he has made bamboo rods exclusively. Bamboo rods offer a unique opportunity to control the entire rod making process from blank design and fabrication to final finish. John offers a unique opportunity for customers to specify custom features for their fly rod including 24k gold inlay and carved images when desired.

John’s rods have won praise and accolades from collectors, sportsmen and publications. Most recently one of his rods won Best of Show at the Western Design Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. And in November, his work was named the Outdoor Winner for the 2018, Garden and Gun, Made in the South Awards. His rods have taken fish across the country and in places as remote as Mongolia and South Africa.

J. Stark • Charleston, SC

Stark was founded on my desire to create something tangible. I’d spent the previous decade building digital representations of things – ghosts that would vanish the moment they were unplugged. It began as a rediscovery of my own potential and became something much greater. I learned it wasn’t about me. It’s about all of us. Stark products rely on the hard work of countless artisans, craftspeople and makers that supply us with all of our materials. Once we’ve designed and produced our pieces, they travel to a network of tireless retailers who believe in what we do.

Our work is chosen and put to use by the people who sustain the movement. Some of them buy for the look, others for the feel and everyone appreciates the durability. And we like to think that buying something made in America is part of that equation as well.

We believe in real things made by real people. We believe in products that stand the test of time and earn the investment made in them. We believe in fair wages for hard work and opportunity for anyone willing to learn.

Bryan Horn

Founder, Over Under Clothing • Jacksonville, Florida

I was raised in North Georgia with God's country sitting in my back pocket. From early mornings in the duck blind to burning afternoons in the dove field I was born and raised spending time afield. All through high school and during my time at UGA I yearned for the outdoors and did all I could to be involved and further the "Sporting Lifestyle" for generations to come. While at Georgia, I was employed by a locally owned Men's Haberdashery by the name of George Gibson's. It was here that I began to truly understand what superior clothing looked, felt, and fit like... and I wanted more of it. After graduation I went into my father's trade, homebuilding. Unfortunately, when the market crashed in 2008, I was out of a job and tired of working towards someone else's dream. That's when I realized there was really only one option for me: launch and build a brand based on the very ideals I hold so dearly. Mix that undying passion with the inseparable bond that is formed between a man and his dog, a genuine love for these United States, and a sincere appreciation of fine clothing and the homegrown recipe you get is Over Under Clothing. So pull up a comfortable chair, bring your dog in just a bit closer and feel free to stay as long as you'd please... we think you'll like it here

Virgil Kaine Lowcountry Whiskey Co. founder and CEO David Szlam understands the food and beverage industry in its entirety. Educated at College of Charleston and later the California Culinary Academy, Szlam applies his passions and knowledge of whiskey and food to Virgil Kaine’s products. Thinking outside the barrel, Virgil Kaine is the product of creativity and experimentation to create whiskeys and bourbons with balanced flavors.

Szlam began his culinary background in Charleston under Frank McMahon at Hank’s Seafood where he learned the basics of sauces, knife skills and, most importantly, his love of building experience through ingredients and flavors. In 2001, he moved to San Francisco where he sharpened his culinary skills working in various celebrated kitchens, including Roland Passot, Gary Danko and Daniel Humm. Missing his Lowcountry roots, Szlam relocated to Charleston in 2004, and opened Cordavi, a new American restaurant concept that gained national attention, making Esquire’s list of the Top 20 New Restaurants of America in 2005.

In 2011, Szlam’s passion for whiskey prompted him to transition out of the kitchen and create Virgil Kaine, applying his culinary experiences to the process of blending and creating unique flavor profiles.

The name Virgil Kaine is inspired by the man himself who, in theory, did not let tradition and the influence of his surroundings make him succumb to the visions of the Old South. Much like its namesake, Virgil Kaine whiskey steps outside of the barrel and the traditions of American Whiskey, adding blending and infusing techniques to make a new kind of whiskey that entered the market when there was nothing else of its kind available.

When Szlam isn’t perfecting the art of whiskey at Virgil Kaine, you can find him on a boat drinking Natural Light or spending time with his wife, Chelsey, two sons, Harlan and Dylan, and their bulldog puppy named Biggs. Szlam enjoys fishing, gardening and BBQ.

King Bean • Charleston, SC

Kurt Weinberger began King Bean Coffee Roasters in his parents’ garage in South Carolina in 1994 at the young age of 23. He'd just finished a stint in the Navy, stationed near Seattle. The coffee scene was exploding in the Pacific Northwest, but hadn’t found its way yet to South Carolina.

Kurt, the son of restaurateurs, fused his newfound passion for coffee with his culinary upbringing. He purchased his first roaster and began roasting coffee, wholesale for culinary establishments. 20 years and three roaster upgrades later, King Bean Coffee Roasters is operating at a level of which few non-institutional roasters in the U.S. are capable. We roast coffee daily on our 60-kilo Petrocini roaster and all our coffee is still packed by hand. With our retail line, we're honored to share the coffee that Lowcountry chefs have chosen for years.

Chris Williams

Founder, Williams Knife Company • Johns Island, South Carolina

As a young boy, Chris Williams did not expect to be a knife-maker. But he did grow up hanging out in his Grandfather’s workshop watching him turn old band saw blades into knives. Fascinated with the idea of blending steel, wood and other natural materials together into something useful, Chris slowly began to develop his own style of knife making using everything he had learned from his Grandfather and adding his own special style. For Chris, it was a passionate hobby that he would and is still trying to perfect.

Chris graduated from college and pursued a career in finance and achieved early success. In his limited free time, he would make knives in his own workshop that he built to look just like his grandfather’s. An avid outdoorsman and foodie, Chris loves to hunt, fish and cook. And, as you might expect, he often crafted knives that he could use in pursuit of his hobbies. He would pull out his knives in the kitchen when friends were over or carry his knives with him into the field. His knives caused quite a stir. People would beg him to make something special for them. Those were the first Williams knives; only there was no Williams Knife Company - not just yet. So, Chris began to make a few very special knives for a select few. It’s here that Chris honed his craft, making one knife at a time, choosing steel and experimenting with new styles, woods and other materials. Soon, he was staying up late at night and getting up early to get into the shop and slowly the fire of financing began to fade and the fire to create beautiful one-of-a-kind heirlooms grew intensely brighter.

Of course, one thing led to another and complete strangers began to call Chris and ask him to make knives for them. Many of these were custom requests using special wood or with special engraving on the blade. One day, Chris walked out to his shop and saw 15 knives in various stages of completion and realized that every time he walked into the shop the stress of the day left his shoulders and was replaced by joy and passion. That’s when the idea of turning his love into a career first began. In 2009, the Greenville native traded in his suit for his small workshop on John’s Island, just outside Charleston, South Carolina with a grinding wheel and a fresh new outlook on life. And, so the dream began.
